I live in Portage Michigan and am mother to a wonderful little boy whom I gave birth to in 2014. When I learned I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to birth naturally and try to avoid any medical interventions. I was especially concerned about this since I planned to birth in a hospital. I really wanted to be prepared because, to me, it seemed like the Kalamazoo area hospitals viewed pregnancy and birthing as medical conditions that needed to be treated, not something that is a natural event. So, I looked around at options for birthing classes in Portage and Kalamazoo but really couldn't find anything that appealed to me. They all seemed more complex than should be necessary. I just wanted to birth my baby in a healthy, relaxed way. I did not want to think about a bunch of steps or techniques that in no way seemed natural to me.
As I kept searching, hoping to find something that resonated with me, I came across the Mongan Method HypnoBirthing®. As I learned about it I thought, “Wow, finally, something that makes sense.” It embraces the ideas that women's bodies are designed to birth and that birth is totally natural. It questions if we are designed to birth, why should it be so painful and traumatic? If you watch animals give birth, they do not seem to experience such intense birthing pain. It acknowledges that much of what women have come to expect from pregnancy, labor, and birthing has been influenced by tradition, media and other social influences. The more I learned, I realized HypnoBirthing is about empowering women, and helping them to experience birthing in a relaxed, gentle way. And, HypnoBirthing® allows for every birthing experience being different. It is not just another static or inflexible way to give birth. It helps the mom to become more confident in her ability to birth her baby, make decisions, and feel supported no matter what path her birth experience takes. Moms are able to labor calmly, whether they choose a hospital birth, a birthing center, or a home birth, and feel comfortable.
My own experience with HypnoBirthing was very positive. I felt I gained so much from my birth education class that it inspired me to become a trained Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® Instructor so I could provide women living in Kalamazoo, Portage and the surrounding communities of Michigan an alternative to the birth education and preparation classes currently offered.
